Stories of Hope is a section where we share stories related to Danielle after her passing. Perhaps it’s an initiative that someone or an organization did to commemorate her. Perhaps it is a non-profit or person in the past with whom we worked with that is doing good things in the world that fill us with hope for tomorrow. Maybe it is seeing the philanthropy going to good use or someone who has benefitted from one of the Foundation’s projects reaching back. These are stories that lift us up when we feel down and lost. I hope they make you feel a spark of hope as well.

Within the block where Danielle grew up, in Scarborough Ontario, at the intersection of Midland and Lawrence, a new street will be named after her. Fittingly, the street is called Danielle Moore Circle. The sign isn’t fully ready yet but every time we walk past, seeing this temporary sign makes us smile.
Joanne Han, a member of the York Mills Running Club, presented a proposal to her employer to donate to the Danielle Moore Spring of Hope Foundation. The company held a competition to hear sales pitches for charitable donations and to award the winner $20,000 to be donated to the subject foundation. Well, she won!
We were deeply moved by her determination and she replied, “I read through so many posts of love for Danielle and researched her amazing work when preparing my presentation. To be honest, when I shared Danielle’s story and about the scholarships and wonderful work you are doing with the foundation, several people teared up and I won the competition with overwhelming support of not only management but with the majority of the office. I was so honoured to share her story with other people and hope to continue to support your family by planting more seeds!”
Joanne planted this seed of kindness into the fertile soil laid down through Danielle’s activism. Hope begets positive action. Kindness is contagious.

Danielle was awarded the Toronto Catholic District School Board Alumni Award. In the words of the Trustee, Garry Tanuan, Danielle’s “ … compassionate nature, spirit for life, and positivity are all the things that made Danielle such a wonderful human being and a great example to others. She laughed, she smiled, she led, she supported and she was kind, but above all, she was a Falcon.”

Danielle was honoured by Ecology Action Centre in 2021 with an audio-art presentation honouring her work with the Centre. Visit the site and take a listen!
This was in celebration of EAC’s 50th anniversary. The concert that they held to celebrate also commemorated Danielle’s work with the organization and the greater Halifax community.
Bill Rudolph is another artist that was inspired by Danielle’s work with biking. In his words, “this light sculpture celebrates Danielle’s spirit and her ability to inspire and empower others to live with hope, brilliance, and cautious optimism.”

It is very hard to see light when your life has been torn to misery. However, the York Mills Running Room Club (now YMR), has always been there for our family during the darkest days. Money was raised to have the City of Toronto plant a memorial tree in Danielle’s name. This tulip tree will use the light from the sun and love from the runners and will grow.

Danielle was one of a few Scarborough individuals who was featured by an artist during the 2019 Nuit Blanche Art Festival. This artwork was created by Mark Stoddart – a proud Scarborough resident.

The Starfish Award is presented by The Starfish Environmental Society. It inspires “… young Canadians to take leadership roles in their communities and to celebrate their peers contributing to the environmentalism movement.” The Charitable Organization has been operating since 2010, adjudicates and presents the Starfish Award to 25 of Canada’s youth who “…amplify and empower youth voices in the environmentalism movement through a range of programming.” This was awarded posthumously to Danielle and her colleague Micah Messent who died in the crash.
To commemorate Danielle’s effort and achievements with Ecology Action Centre (EAC) and also the maritime community in general, EAC has renamed the Sunshine award to the Danielle Moore Sunshine award. The award is given to a group or an individual who has made a particularly effective effort in an environmental issue in Nova Scotia. This is a Story of Hope that keeps giving annually and continues to inform us of the great causes for which people are actively fighting in Nova Scotia.
